- Abstract
- This research aims to recognize the problems that may arise translating Korean into English, focusing on English equivalent expressions, based on the information structure of English and Korean. For this purpose I examine the differences between old and new information and how it is represented in English and Korean sentence structures. This paper also discusses the differences between temporal conjunctions such as when and as, and causal conjunctions such as because, as, since, and for. These differences often cause problems in Korean-to-English translation. This paper argues that Korean translators may make errors with Korean-to-English translation if they do not recognize the differences regarding the implications and usages between similar sentence structures and temporal and causal conjunctions of English when Korean does not have matching equivalents. It is important therefore for translation institutions to offer courses in Korean/English comparative linguistics for translators by providing an in-depth education concerning the similarities and differences in meaning, nuance, and implications for similar expressions between Korean and English.
