Abstract
We can see the development of commerce and the circulation of money with the revival of the cities located in the Franche-Comté in the 13th century. It is possible to say that the feudal society is moving from the relationship based in land, what we called ‘fief’, to that of money. Especially, it is interesting in observing the keen interest of Burgundian counts for the salt produced in the south of Jura. This articles aims to examine the characters of seigneurie of Jean de Châ̂lon leading such changes in this time. In the June of 1237, he became the count of Salins by the exchange from the region of Saône to that of Salins with the duc of Hugh IV of Burgundy. Strategically, Jean de Châ̂lon tried to seize the political and the religious status in offering the fief by the rent of the brine or the salt to the vassals, the friends and the relatives. Besides, he gave the donations of the rent of the brine or the salt to the churches. As a result, Jean de Châ̂lon was successful in making the image of generous and ideal seigneur as he desired. Most of all, Jean de Châ̂lon began to monopolize not only the process of manufacturing of the salt, called ‘Meix’, but also the circulation and the sale of the salt. It can say that Jean de Châ̂lon expanded his seigneurie by the strategic management of the salt in the 13th century.
