- Abstract
- The question of whether to regard noun+noun structures in English as compound words or phrases has been controversial. To answer this question, we first examine the relationship between the two components of noun+noun, using the familiar adjective+noun structures forming ascriptive or associative combinations. Associative attributes typically appear as a combination of lexical noun+noun. On the other hand, ascriptive properties usually appear as syntactic noun+noun combinations. Based on the above, this study analyzed the noun+noun structure in the relation between two elements of noun+noun structure. First, in the NN structure, when the first noun is ascriptive to the second noun, the NN structure is a phrase Second, when the first noun is associative, the NN structure is interpreted as a compound word. Third, the NN type with end stress tends to prefer an attributive attribute to an associative one.
