- Abstract
- This paper addresses the problems that can arise translating Korean into English, focusing on English and Korean double object constructions and discussing how to overcome them. I discuss how double objects constructions differ from oblique dative constructions in terms of information structure, explaining how old and new information is represented in English and Korean sentences. I also discuss the differences in thematic roles between English verbs such as give, donate, spare to explain why both double object constructions and oblique dative constructions are possible with some verbs, but not with other verbs in English, whereas both types of constructions are possible with a broader range of verbs in Korean. I explain how these differences may cause problems in Korean-to-English translation. I argue that Korean translators may face troubles with Korean-to-English translation unless they understand the differences between Korean and English double object constructions because English may not have matching equivalents of Korean expressions.
