| dc.description.abstract | This study investigates frequency information of the English delexical verb get found in the listening transcripts of high school English textbooks (188 tokens) and compares the grammatical and semantic usage distributions to spoken data (2,000 tokens from SBC and TED). The overall results show that <get+NP> structure and {buy} meaning are ranked highest in the textbooks, which is also evident in the spoken data. However, the top-ranked grammatical and semantic types in the textbooks are relatively overused (“get+NP”(+20%); {buy}(+23%)) or underused (“have got”(-7%); {have/experience}(-18%)) when compared to the authentic material. The mismatch of word usages in the textbooks can interfere frequency-based lexical learning such that learners cannot be exposed to the appropriate frequency information of English vocabulary, which in turn can cause learners’ unnatural lexical choices. Given the role played by textbooks, teachers and researchers need more attentions to delexical verbs, whose grammatical and semantic usages are diverse and extensive in spoken English. | - |
