Abstract
The fluid viscous damper is a very useful device to dissipate the seismic energy. The dissipated energy on the fluid viscous damper is proportion to the resistance force. However, the resistance force is not proportion to the velocity linearly, but it is proportion to the power of the velocity. When the power index is less than 1, more energy can be dissipated. In order to obtain a lower power index, the operating fluid should be not only a non-Newtonian fluid but also occurred the shear thinning. To predict the resistance force on the fluid viscous damper, the unsteady computational method was applied. Based on the numerical result, a fluid viscous damper of 500 kN class was developed, and its performance test was conducted. Through the this study, the developed numerical method could be a very useful tool to design an effective fluid viscous damper.
