Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the history and characteristics of Tongyeong Nubi(quilting) and analyze howits tradition is passed down and its contemporary applications, as well as its current enterprise and products. This study started with examining the history and characteristics of Tongyeong Nubi by referencing newspaper articles searched by the two keywords, “Tongyeong Nubi” and “Chungmu Nubi.” Then, it investigated the history of Tongyeong Nubi, the existing status of the Tongyeong Nubi industry and manufacturers, and education based on books published by Tongyeong City Hall. Lastly, it studied Tongyeong Nubi products by analyzing websites on Tongyeong Nubi and conducting in-store surveys from June to September 2018. Tongyeong Nubi utilizes the sewing machine and Tongyeong foot pedal but follows the traditional hand-sewn quilting method. It feature by embroidery such as peony or bat patterns on top of the quilting fabric. The study found that Tongyeong Nubi was popularly used to make Ibul (coverlets) for wedding gifts and Chune (baby blanket) in the past. Today, the demand for Tongyeong Nubi bedding and clothing is very low and only small accessories utilizing Tongyeong Nubi, such as bags, wallets, and pouches, are produced and sold. Even though there is an effort to make various Tongyeong Nubi products, they are only for display.. Furthermore, the “Tongyeong Nubi Craftsman” course was offered to pass on the knowledge of Tongyeong Nubi to the next generation up until 2017, but it currently runs as an occasional one-time promotional event. Tongyeong Nubi has been merely viewed as a souvenir from the Tongyeong area despite its being representative of the region’s traditional crafts. Governmental support has also been insufficient compared with other traditional Tongyeong crafts. Hence, the development of various Tongyeong Nubi product designs is needed to expand the market.
