Pellets were manufactured with wood sawdust and bituminous coal, and their quality was analyzed. When the particles of bituminous coals above 25 percent were mixed with the sawdust, the pellets were not formed well. Low calorific value of the wood pellet was around 16 MJ/kg but the pellets made with bituminous coal increased over 19 MJ/kg. As the bituminous coal was added, apparent densities of the pellets started to decrease but more addition of the coal over 20% contributed to the increase up to the density of wood pellet. Durability of the pellets was slightly decreased 2 percent more than that of the wood pellet with the addition of bituminous coal. Ash contents of the pellets were slightly increased by mixing with the coal particles, which were less than 1.05 percent. The addition of the coal particles caused carbon contents to increase and the oxygen contents to decrease. Finally, it was confirmed that the coal particles could be meaningful additives capable of improving the effectiveness of lignocellulosic pellets as fuels in co-firing. ? 2019 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry.
